OYBike is a street based self-service automated rental station network for one-way bicycle hire accessed from a mobile phone.

Most city transport systems are component journeys i.e. The start of the journey is on foot or car to a station or bus stop then as the destination gets closer a Tube, Bus, Taxi and foot complete the journey.  These component journeys are undertaken with a means of transport that allows multiple users, for differing destinations, to continuously make use of the infrastructure available.  A major improvement in the use of bicycles and the cycle routes has now been achieved by making cycling part of the infrastructure for component type journeys. 

The choice of the bicycle as a transport component, which has the freedom of one-way use to differing destinations, is now being delivered.  OYBike systems developed the hardware, software, and obtained permission from Hammersmith and Fulham council to begin a pilot scheme.

OYBike is now operational in Hammersmith and Fulham.Bikes are available from 23 locations in the borough, and can be rented by users who register with £10 credit payment, and then use their mobile phones to access the code to unlock the bike they want to use.  The pilot project has been sucessfully operating over the past 15 months and is growing in use daily. Hammersmith and Fulham were awarded the innovation in transport trophy for 2005 and OYBike Systems Ltd were the British invention society gold medal 2005.
